Frequently Asked Questions
Answers to common questions about singing lessons, vocal coaching, our performance programs and studio hire at Performance Studios.
Getting Started
-
Absolutely. We welcome beginners of all ages, including people who have never sung in front of anyone before. Your first lessons build healthy voice habits, solid technique and confidence, giving you a strong foundation for whatever comes next, from singing for fun to auditions and competitions.
-
We teach children, teens and adults. Private lessons suit young singers from around 6 years old, and our Junior Performance Team is open to singers aged 9 to 13. If you're not sure your child is ready, book a complimentary consultation and we'll help you decide.
-
No. Many of our students start as adults, and your voice can keep improving at any age with the right training. Whether you want to sing for enjoyment, perform at gigs or build a career, lessons are tailored to your voice and goals.
-
No. You don't need any previous lessons or the ability to read music. We'll teach the musicianship you need along the way. If you'd like formal musicianship and theory accreditation, our Performer Development Program offers an external stream for that.
-
Book a complimentary consultation! We'll talk about your voice, your goals and which coach and lesson package suits you best. You can also call us on 0499 94 94 95 or email info@performancestudios.com.au.
-
Each of our coaches has their own specialties, from classical and opera to jazz, musical theatre, pop and soul. Read their profiles on our Meet the Team page, or let us match you during your free consultation based on your goals, style and learning needs.
Singing Lessons
-
Each one-on-one lesson is built around your voice and goals. A typical session includes a warm-up, technical work on breath, tone, range and vocal health, then applying it to your songs with coaching on expression and stage presence. You'll leave with clear exercises to practise before your next lesson.
-
We offer 30, 45 and 60-minute private lessons. Most students train once or twice weekly for steady progress, while busy singers often choose fortnightly lessons with our Five Class Pass. Your coach can recommend the best length and frequency for your age, level and goals.
-
We teach a broad range of contemporary styles such as pop, musical theatre, jazz, soul, folk and even some classical. Every style is built on the same healthy, functional technique, so you develop the versatility needed for auditions, recordings and live performance.
-
Yes. Online lessons are available worldwide, with real-time feedback, personalised exercises and performance coaching, just like lessons in the studio. All you need is a reliable internet connection, a device with a camera and a quiet space to sing.
-
Yes. Stagecraft, performance psychology and confidence training are a core part of every lesson. We help you develop poise, presence and expressive performance skills, then put them into practice on our in-house stage, both live and on camera.
-
Yes. Many of our students come to us wanting to feel calmer and more in control when they perform. We combine mindset and nervous-system strategies with plenty of real performance practice, so your confidence grows alongside your technique.
-
Yes. Students can perform at our end-of-semester showcases, studio events and productions, using real microphones, lighting and live audiences. Showcases are also how students progress through our nine-level Performer Development Program, earning a medal for each level completed.
-
Yes. We coach singers preparing for live performances, eisteddfods, singing competitions and televised events. Coaching covers vocal technique, repertoire selection, stage presence and performance mindset, so you can deliver your best on stage, on camera or in front of a panel.
-

-
Most singers start preparing 6 to 12 weeks before an audition. The right timeframe depends on your current skill level, the audition requirements and the songs you're performing. We'll create a plan that gets you technically ready, confident and stage-prepared.
-
Yes. We prepare singers for studio recording, including vocal technique, breath control, microphone technique and expressive performance. Students on our Gold Semester Pass also get free use of our rehearsal rooms and recording equipment.
-
Yes. Healthy, sustainable technique is the foundation of everything we teach. Our coaches use evidence-based methods, including SOVT exercises such as straw phonation, to reduce strain and fatigue, build stamina and help your voice stay strong over time.
Neurodivergent-Friendly Lessons & Accessibility
-
Yes. Neurodivergent-friendly teaching is central to who we are, and more than half of our Performance Studios community identifies as neurodivergent. We work with your learning style, not around it, so autistic, ADHD and other neurodivergent singers can learn comfortably and thrive. Read more in Inside Our Neurodivergent-Friendly Singing Space.
-
Coaches adjust pacing, focus and communication to suit each singer. That can mean breaking tasks into smaller steps, using visuals, allowing extra processing time or adding hands-on activities. If one approach isn't working, we change it.
-
Yes. Our rooms have adjustable lighting and sound, flexible seating and sensory tools on hand, because no two nervous systems are the same. Let us know what helps you feel comfortable, and we'll set the room up before you arrive.
-
Executive Vocal Coach Beth Parr specialises in supporting neurodivergent students. Drawing on her own experience as a late-diagnosed neurodivergent creative (AuDHD), she adapts every lesson with strategies for focus, sensory regulation, pacing and communication. All of our coaches use adaptive, individual teaching.
-
Yes. We welcome young singers of all abilities and tailor every lesson to the individual. One of our students first came to us as a non-verbal five-year-old, and now performs confidently and places in eisteddfods and competitions. Book a complimentary consultation so we can learn about your child and recommend the right coach.
-

Teams train on Saturdays during school terms at our Loganholme studio. Learn more about EPT.
-
Yes. All members of the Junior Performance Team, Elite Performance Team and VAMP must take regular private singing lessons. Lessons can be with any teacher, at Performance Studios or elsewhere.
-
The Junior Performance Team is $45 per week, or $40 per week ($400 per term) when you pay for the full term upfront.
The Elite Performance team is $125 per week, or $120 per week ($1200 per term) when you pay for the full term upfront. -

-
Entry is by audition, and places are limited. First-round auditions for the 2027 intake are on Tuesday 15 December 2026 at our Loganholme studio. Apply online, and we'll confirm your audition time. Prepare two contrasting songs (ideally one uptempo and one ballad) with backing tracks, a short artistic statement about your musical goals and a performance portfolio with a brief bio and performance history.
-
We look for vocal ability and musical interpretation, stage presence and audience connection, a positive, coachable attitude and a commitment to teamwork and growth. We're looking for potential, not perfection.
-
No. Current members book a re-entry interview instead of re-auditioning.
-
EPT members perform at our showcases and soirees, studio productions and community events. Past performances include the EKKA, Logan City Christmas Carols, Eat Street Northshore and the Carers Foundation's Unsung Heroes Gala.
-
Members attend every weekly rehearsal and scheduled performance, practise at home between sessions, support their teammates and represent Performance Studios positively at every event.
Vocal Athlete
Mastery Program
(VAMP )
-
VAMP, the Vocal Athlete Mastery Program, is our senior performance and artist development program for singers aged 18 and over. It turns committed adult singers into working, gig-ready artists through vocal athlete conditioning, stage presence training, weekly Show Lab performance feedback and artist development. Learn more about VAMP.
-
VAMP is for singers aged 18+ from any studio or vocal coach who are ready to work at a professional level. You don't need performance experience. We look for potential, discipline, teachability and the independence to prepare material at home.
-
You'll build four 45-minute gig sets: background and lounge, function and party, a feature set with an original song, and a Christmas set. Training also covers stage presence, repertoire and set building, charts and working with a band, songwriting, branding and the business of gigging, including ABNs, insurance, invoicing, pricing, tax and super.
-
VAMP runs every Saturday during school terms, from 9:30am to 2:00pm, at our Loganholme studio. Each class includes a warm-up and song review, staging and stage presence, artist development and a Show Lab performance with live notes. There are also about five extra rehearsals a year before major performances.
-
VAMP is $145 per week, or $140 per week ($1400 per term) when you pay for the full term upfront. Additional costs can include a team jacket ($105 to $125, when needed), costumes, backing tracks and photoshoots.
-
Yes. VAMP focuses on performance and artist development rather than vocal technique, so members take regular private lessons with a teacher of their choice. You can keep your current teacher or learn with one of our coaches.
-
VAMP artists members perform at our showcases and soirees, studio productions and community events. Past performances include the EKKA, Eat Street Northshore and the Carers Foundation's Unsung Heroes Gala, as well as events booked through the studio and at gigs they book themselves.

The Voice Straw
-
The Voice Straw is a precision-calibrated, reusable stainless-steel vocal training tool, developed by celebrity vocal coach Mindy Pack with voice scientists. It's used for straw phonation, a type of SOVT exercise that helps singers and speakers warm up, balance their voice and reduce strain. Performance Studios is the exclusive Australian stockist. Shop The Voice Straw.
-
Singing or humming through a straw creates gentle back-pressure in your vocal tract. This helps your vocal folds come together efficiently with less effort and impact, reducing tension, breathiness and fatigue while improving balance, stamina and resonance. It's a semi-occluded vocal tract (SOVT) exercise, widely used by singers, coaches and voice professionals.
-
The Voice Straw suits singers of all styles, actors, comedians, speakers, voice-over artists, TV and radio presenters, teachers, trainers and executives. Anyone who uses their voice a lot can benefit.
-
The Voice Straw is $90, The Voice Straw Complete Set is $110 and The Voice Straw H2O is $140, available from our online shop.
-
The Voice Straw is a set of stainless-steel straws that can be used in or out of water. The Voice Straw H2O is a water-based system with extra-long angled straws that fit taller bottles, soft lip pillows with no metal contact on the lips and adjustable water depth, so you can see your airflow in the water.
-
Straws range from 10.5mm ("The Big Kahuna", best used in water) down to 1.5mm. Go smaller if the exercise feels easy or too much air flows through. Go bigger if you feel squeezing, strain or head pressure, or when your voice is tired, unwell or recovering.
-
Voice Cups attach to the end of The Voice Straw and sit over your mouth, so you can practise articulation, speech and belting with the benefits of straw phonation. They're popular with singers, actors, voice-over artists and coaches.
-
Yes. Every purchase includes three workout tracks, and full workout plans are available for women, men and teens. To access them, enter the code from your confirmation receipt on our website. Plans include guidance on choosing the right straw, how to use it and what you should feel.
