It’s Super Nerdy & Super Effective.

Anyone who has stepped foot into Performance Studios knows that at some stage they will be introduced to straw work. It’s one of the most effective ways to strengthen, balance, and protect the voice. But not all straws are created equal.

Enter the Voice Straw, developed by internationally renowned vocal coach Mindy Pack — the voice behind stars such as Miley Cyrus, Sabrina Carpenter, and Noah Kahan. From her studio in the U.S., Mindy has become one of the most trusted vocal technicians in the world, known for bridging science, artistry, and vocal health at the very highest level of the music industry.

Recognising the need for singers, actors, and speakers to have access to a tool that is both scientifically validated and practical in daily training, Mindy worked with leading voice scientists to design the Voice Straw. Unlike a disposable straw, the Voice Straw is a precision-calibrated stainless-steel tool that supports the principles of SOVT (semi-occluded vocal tract) exercises — a method proven to reduce tension, strain, breathiness, cracking, and vocal fatigue, while improving balance, stamina, and resonance.

At Performance Studios, we are proud to be the Australian distributor of the Voice Straw, making this must-have training tool accessible to singers, actors, teachers, and speakers across the country. By aligning with Mindy’s vision and research, we continue our mission of empowering voices with tools that are evidence-based, artist-tested, and results-driven.

Why a Straw?

The Voice Cups

The Ultimate Companion to Straw Phonation

Voice Cups are the next step in vocal training for singers, actors, voice-over artists, and coaches. This innovative tool combines the classic benefits of straw phonation with a unique cup attachment to help you refine everything from articulation to belting. Voice Cups help reduce tension and strain, improve clarity, and support healthy vocal production, making them an ideal addition to your training toolkit.

The Voice Cup system is easy to use and designed for versatility. Just attach the cup to the straw, place it over your mouth, and experience an immediate difference in how your voice feels and sounds. The stainless steel straws are reusable and come in different sizes to suit your voice as it develops. Ready to take your vocal training to a whole new level? Voice Cups bring an exciting new way to achieve balance and strength in every session!

Choosing your Resistance

When to go smaller

If you feel the following, switch to a straw with a smaller diameter:

  • It feels easy

  • You are running out of air

  • Too much breath is flowing through the straw

  • You don't feel the back pressure in your throat

  • You don't feel the openness in your throat

Interchanging Sizes

If any of the following apply to you, you may need to interchange straw sizes more frequently:

  • The voice is tired

  • Menstruation

  • Change in medication

  • Lack of sleep

  • Allergies

  • Post surgery

  • When rehabilitating vocal injury

(Note: When you are expanding your vocal range, you may need to add a second straw the higher you go.)

When to go bigger

If you experience any of the following, switch or add straws to get a bigger diameter.

  • Squeezing in the throat

  • Unnecessary tension or strain

  • Inability to reach high notes

  • Head pressure

  • When recovering from a cold

  • After a heavy voice demand (long day of speaking or singing)

(Note: Try using the bigger straw or using both small straws at the same time.)
