Why a Straw?
-
Based on exceptional science and peer-reviewed studies, including pioneering work by voice scientist, Dr. Ingo Titze, we realised the Voice Straw would be the most important tool in a singer’s toolbox.
The straw is a training and rehabilitation tool. It is all about pressure and resistance in the throat. There are plenty of straws out there but The Voice Straw offers a few unique features that truly leverage the science it is founded on.
Discover the transformative power of The Voice Straw™ and Cup, meticulously crafted vocal training tools tailored for singers, actors, and speakers. Harnessing the efficacy of SOVT exercise, including the acclaimed straw phonation technique both in water and out, our products stand as pinnacle solutions for vocal enhancement. The straws train the posturing of the vocal folds using SOVT.
What is SOVT?
SOVT (Semi Occluded Vocal Tract) techniques and training exercises are integral components of vocal workouts designed to optimize vocal performance. By adopting a partially closed mouth position, these exercises generate back-pressure and resistance during vocalization. This unique setup facilitates the vibration of vocal cords with reduced effort and in ideal alignment, effectively alleviating strain and tension. Through SOVT exercises, individuals can explore their vocal range, project with clarity, and expressively vocalise without compromising vocal health. Whether it's exploring the depths of one's range or delivering powerful performances, SOVT techniques empower vocalists to achieve their full potential while maintaining a healthy vocal configuration.
-
When the vocal folds vibrate there are varying ranges of open phases and close phases. What we want is to get the average of the opening of the vocal fold movements. Whatever that average opening your vocal folds are doing it should be very similar to the diameter of the straw, which is why you need to play around with the size. The idea is that you wouldn’t want a huge diameter in the straw because that would not help with your vocal efficiency. That is why graduating to smaller straw sizes makes sense because you are actually closing the vocal folds and putting them in a squared-up position.
Because there is so much back pressure happening it makes it so you cannot over squeeze. What you are doing is targeting the muscles that put the vocal folds in a squared-up position which then is lowering your phonation threshold pressure. We are reconfiguring the posturing of the vocal tract.
When using the straw, If you try to cough or squeeze a hard glottal attack, you can’t because the backpressure is counteracting. If you have a breathy voice, then you would get no sound, so you know the straw is bringing it together. The degree to which it brings the vocal folds together is determined by the diameter of the straw.
-
The back pressure does two things:
Lowers the larynx
Increase the epi laryngeal space. Most likely in length because it is pushing back the false vocal folds and it’s allowing the larynx to come down.
So we are looking at the ratio between the Epi Laryngeal Tube and the Pharynx. The nice thing about what the straw does is it lengthens the tube. You get the feeling of a long narrow tube (long narrow tube of the straw) and a feeling of what inertance (acoustical pressure) does. When you take the straw out hopefully it has trained the muscles to give you a better ratio in the pharynx

Choosing your Resistance
When to go smaller
If you feel the following, switch to a straw with a smaller diameter:
It feels easy
You are running out of air
Too much breath is flowing through the straw
You don't feel the back pressure in your throat
You don't feel the openness in your throat
Interchanging Sizes
If any of the following apply to you, you may need to interchange straw sizes more frequently:
The voice is tired
Menstruation
Change in medication
Lack of sleep
Allergies
Post surgery
When rehabilitating vocal injury
(Note: When you are expanding your vocal range, you may need to add a second straw the higher you go.)
When to go bigger
If you experience any of the following, switch or add straws to get a bigger diameter.
Squeezing in the throat
Unnecessary tension or strain
Inability to reach high notes
Head pressure
When recovering from a cold
After a heavy voice demand (long day of speaking or singing)
(Note: Try using the bigger straw or using both small straws at the same time.)
